Support system for collaborative research - Joint Research Center for Fashion and Clothing Culture

  • Direct access, free of charge to research resources, such as the library, museum and Fashion Resource Center
  • Installation of a fully-furnished research space and resources in the institute


  • A collection of 320,000 titles, including 70,000 which are fashion-related (22% of total)
  • A collection of 2,500 titles of the journals related to fashion and life style. Subscribing journals are 733 titles, of which 372 are fashion-related (51% of total).
  • Collection of 4,000 valuable books, including women's mode magazines from the 17th to 19th century, the world's first documents on fashion, documents on uniforms from the 18th & 19th centuries, documents on folk costumes from the 18th & 19th centuries and more.
  • Microfilm documents of magazines such as Vogue and Harpers' Bazaar available for viewing from the very first issue.

Fashion Resource Center


Consists of the costume division, audio & visual division and textile division.

  • Costume division: Around 50,000 different costume and accessory items are stored here from fashion shows of the fashion college and the university as well as fashion competition prize winners, including the Soen Prize. There are also works of famous designers and commercial products.
  • Audio & visual division: the database gives access to visual data on 110,000 items from the works of 5 major collections,designer works and haute couture from Paris.
  • Textile division: Over 8,000 items from basic materials to the latest trends. Textiles on display can be handled and scrutinised.

Costume Museum

  • Collects and preserves 20,000 pieces of articles with high cultural values. The museum presents 4 exhibitions per year.

AFP World Academic Archive

We have been planning and running the “AFP World Academic Archive” an online news archive provided to educational organizations in Japan through the news database of AFP (Agence France-Press). This service holds more than 8,000,000 downloadable images and news articles distributed to over 13,000 news media outlets worldwide as approved data for educational and academic purposes.
